Successive generations of the Astra hatchback have always been among the most aesthetically pleasing passenger cars on the road, and the latest model continues this tradition. The sharp-edged LED signature headlights segue seamlessly into the front grille, strengthening the visual impact of the car’s athletic front profile. The side view and rising window line, together with the divided C-pillar that gives the impression of a “floating” roof, renders the vehicle attractive from any angle. 16”, 17” or 18” alloy wheels enhance the Astra’s handsome exterior still further.
The Astra hatch’s total length, as well as its wheelbase, is shorter than the sixth-generation version, resulting in crisper steering and more dynamic handling. At the same time, the designers have achieved the astonishing feat of increasing interior space for passengers. The redesigned seats now offer occupants in the rear 35mm more legroom, whilst drivers will enjoy increased headroom.
A number of highly inventive new features will give drivers of the Astra safer and more relaxing journeys than ever before. The optional IntelliLux LED Matrix headlights, for example, work with the front camera system so you can drive on high beam without dazzling other road users. The Driver Assistance Pack, standard in the SRi specification, uses a front camera system to recognise traffic signs, alert the driver to a potential collision, sound a warning if you start to drift out of your lane on the motorway and even provides a steering wheel push back. Optional Keyless Entry & Start and the hands-free Advanced Park Assist functions, meanwhile, make the locking, unlocking and parking of the Astra an effortless and automatic process.
A refined cabin keeps you comfortable and refreshed throughout the longest journeys. Ergonomically excellent and multi-adjustable AGR front seats that provide superb lumbar support are also available. Heated front and outer rear seats and a heated steering wheel are standard equipment on the Elite specification. Drivers looking for an additional touch of luxury, can choose the optional Power Driver’s Seat with massage and ventilation functions, or even the AirWellness feature which periodically releases “Energising Dark Wood” or “Balancing Green Tea” fragrances.
The painstaking work of Vauxhall engineers has reduced weight by up to 200kg (depending on the model chosen), resulting in improvements to both performance and efficiency. This lighter frame adds to the exceptionally low fuel consumption and carbon emissions of its engine range. A finely calibrated five- or six-speed manual or automatic transmission ensures that acceleration is always smooth and rapid.
The R 4.0 IntelliLink, the latest edition of Vauxhall’s acclaimed infotainment system, is standard on all Astra models. It is controlled via a 7” colour touchscreen, gives drivers hands-free Bluetooth connectivity, and is compatible with the Apple CarPlay and Android Auto interfaces – enabling you to access selected functions of a connected smartphone through the touchscreen or Siri voice control. Elite Nav models provide rear passengers with two USB sockets, with which devices can be recharged.
